(Images above are ICBMs) The North Korea National Broadcast declared that the North Korean scientists have successfully detonated a Hydrogen Bomb. The broadcast added: "If there's no invasion on our sovereignty we will not use nuclear weapon. This H-bomb test brings us to a higher level of nuclear power."
Yet, the claim is very controversial. Only five countries in the world owns Hydrogen Bomb: U.S, Russia, United Kingdom, China and France. The construction of Hydrogen Bomb requires a highly advanced nuclear technology, as well as extremely expensive and internationally banned radioactive materials. Thus, many experts doubt the validity of the party’s claim.
How powerful is a hydrogen bomb? Czar Bomba, the most representative Hydrogen Bomb was 50 megaton, while Hiroshima A-bomb was 15 kiloton -- a 3300 times difference. Of course, we can not conclude that the North Korean Hydrogen Bomb is as powerful as the Czar Bomba, but the presence of Hydrogen Bomb surely does pose a huge threat on the international society, especially to China, Japan and South Korea.
In response to the nuclear testing, United Nations once again imposed economic sanctions on North Korea, just like they did with previous nuclear experiments. However, economic sanctions proved ineffective, so many people are calling for a more effective resolution.
Furthermore, the international society is not cooperating enough to impose an effective economic sanction. China and Russia, who were traditionally friendly to North Korea, responded passively to the nuclear experiment, though superficially chastising its threat on world peace.
On the other hand, South Korea, Japan and the United States demanded an immediate and stringent economic sanction on North Korea. Those countries also protested militarily -- every time North Korea did a nuclear experiment, the US Navy sent over aircraft carriers and did collective military training with Korea and Japan.
Kim Jung Un is creating nuclear weapon with a large sacrifice from his people. Millions of North Koreans are starving to death, yet he decided to build an extremely expensive nuke instead of improving people’s lives. For the world peace and for the suffering North Korean people within, the United Nations and every country should take resolute actions.
