On May 6, 2016, Kim Jong Un held his first Worker’s Party congress in 36 years. In Pyongyang, the state’s capital, Kim broadcasted his messages through the official state run television network, KCTV. He boasted about his recent achievements, including the successful nuclear test in January and ballistic missiles, and even claimed to have detonated a hydrogen bomb, though evidence is unclear. Kim reminded the nation that his crowning leadership brought fear into the enemies and honor to his entire country. In his meeting he wanted to set an agenda to strengthen both the communist state’s nuclear capabilities and his leadership, while attempting to revitalize their failing economy. The young leader essentially stated that he wanted more power and that he would purge his inner circle of “evil” men. He would do so to ensure loyalty, punish those who were disloyal, and create a group of leaders who would support his future nuclear endeavors. It seems as though Kim is trying to take away resources and power from the military and use it to return to his worker’s party (especially himself). Determined to make his country seem self reliant, he also promised to improve living standards of North Korean citizens.
