Joint Security Area is an award winning film created by the famous director Park Chan Wook. It is a fictional story based on the novel DMZ by Park Sangyeon. The film was created in 2000, so the movie feels a little outdated (just like watching the first and second Terminator series). But, the movie has a strong and interesting story plot that absorbs the viewer into the film. The director also exquisitely mixes comical and melancholy aspects of the film, making the film even more interesting and dramatic.
The movie well-depicts the sorrow of the separated nation. (Korea became the only separated nation after Vietnam and Germany unified) Through the friendship of the characters, the movie shows the intimacy that North and South Korean people feel as the same race of people. The movie shows the humanly aspects of average North Korean people that shatter people’s prejudice against North Korea. The film reminds us again that the North Korean people are just like any other people in the world who are kind hearted and want a happy life. It reminds the viewers once again that the North Korean people are victims of their brutal government after all.
